The other side can test your assumptions. You are never told what they tried.
Send opposing counsel, a mediator, an arbitrator or a judge a link to one saved spousal support calculation. They open it in a browser, with no account and nothing to download, and can change the figures they doubt to see what follows. What they try is worked out and handed back to their screen, and recorded nowhere.
Why it is built that way
A calculation the other side cannot test is one they will redo themselves, on different assumptions, and the conference starts with two numbers. A calculation they can test, but only while you watch, is one they will not touch. So the room lets them push on your numbers in private. You learn only that the link was opened.
What you are told
- How many times the link has been opened.
- The date it was last opened.
Your own "open as the recipient sees it" check is not counted.
What is never recorded
- The figures they put in, or the results they saw.
- Where they moved the position in the range.
- Who opened it, or for how long.
To stop abuse, the server counts requests from each internet address for a few minutes, in memory only. That count holds no figures and is never written down.
Recalculations are not written to your file, to the database or to any log. The server's own activity log notes only that a room was opened or a recalculation requested, without the link's code, so even that line cannot be traced to a room. Because nothing is kept, no setting and no request can produce it later.
What the reader can change
On a Without Child Support calculation the reader can change, for either party:
- annual income, non-taxable income, and eligible and non-eligible dividends;
- RRSP contributions and prior family support being paid;
- whether the eligible dependant credit is claimed.
The range, the duration and both parties' net disposable income are then worked out again by the same engine that produced your calculation. This is a new calculation, not a slider over a picture. Each figure has sensible limits. If a combination cannot be calculated reliably, the room says so and shows no figure.
On a With Child Support calculation the reader can move the position within the range and see every figure follow. Incomes cannot be changed there, because a different income also changes table child support, and showing new spousal support beside the old child support would misstate the whole package.
What the reader sees
- The calculation as you saved it, marked as frozen. Later changes to your file never reach it, and no one can rewrite it.
- The parties' names and, unless you leave it out, the court file number.
- Optionally, a second column setting out your understanding of the other side's position, for comparison. That column cannot be changed by the reader.
- A statement that it was shared on consent, who it was prepared for, and when the link expires.
Nothing else in the file is reachable: no documents, no financial statements, no other matter.
Before a room offers any recalculation, LexiManage first works out the saved calculation again from its saved inputs. It must arrive within $2 a month of the saved result. If it cannot, the room shows the saved result only and says why, rather than letting the reader change a calculation it cannot reproduce.
The link
- Consent first. A room cannot be created until you confirm that both sides agreed to share calculations this way.
- It expires. After 14 days unless you choose otherwise (from 1 to 90 days).
- You can revoke it at any moment, and it stops working at once.
- The link is the key. It carries a 64-character random code that cannot be guessed. Anyone who has the link can open the room until it expires or you revoke it, so send it only to the people it is for.
What it is not
- It covers spousal support under the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (the With and Without Child Support formulas). The guidelines' ranges are advisory, and the room says so.
- It is not a record of what anyone agreed to, and nothing the reader does in it is sent to you.
- The reader's browser receives the inputs behind the saved calculation, as it must in order to show and recalculate them. Do not share a calculation whose inputs you would not show the reader.
In the demo firm you can open a calculation, see how a room is prepared, and read every screen. Creating real links is switched off there.
